Podcasts

I commute for an hour each day, and a great way to pass the time is to listen to 'podcasts', that is pre-recorded audio programmes that are posted to a website and are made available for download so people can listen to them on personal computers or mobile devices. I use Google's 'Listen' application on my Android phone, which downloads the latest available files over wi-fi automatically as soon as they're made available. Here's a selection from the 18 or so that I listen to every week:

The Friday Night Comedy Show from BBC Radio 4, which alternates over the months between Sandy Toksvig's News Quiz and the Now Show.

Linux Outlaws - a very irreverent look at the world of open source software and technology from Dan in Liverpool and Fab in Bonn (not child safe!).

Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo's Film Reviews broadcast on BBC Radio 5 Live, and reproduced in podcast form, is my essential guide to cinema releases every week.

Munchcast is one from Leo Laporte's stable of podcasts on the TWiT network, this one about food with Cammy Blackstone. Yum!

Security Now is another Leo Laporte podcast with Steve Gibson (a long-time computer security expert and head of GRC Corporation) that gives advice and guidance on keeping yourself safe online. It oftens gets very technical however so geeks only I'm afraid.

This American Life, from the US's national public radio network, is a weekly look at the weird and wonderful reality of living in the US today.

This Week In Google, from Leo Laporte, covers everything Google-related on the internet, and features the real experts in the field as well as Google employees, both past and present.

Ubuntu UK Podcast is the decidedly family-friendly programme produced by officionados of the Ubuntu free linux operating system (which I use almost exclusively at home) with news, opinion pieces and advice from a distinctly Thames Valley perspective!
