The Emirates Air Line Cable Car Opens Today

The new cable car connecting the Greenwich Peninsula south of the Thames to Silvertown and the ExCEL exhibition centre to the north opens today! The cost of boarding the ‘Emirates Air Line’ will be £3.20 one way for adults with an Oystercard, or £4.30 if you’re paying cash. Apparently for those planning to use it as part of their daily commute there will be special deals, but there are no details on that at present – although given the kind of job you’re likely to be doing if you live near Greenwich and work at the exhibition centre (i.e. close to minimum wage) I doubt it will be affordable whatever the ‘deal’ might be…

Here’s a recent fly-through so you can see what you’re in for before you board the ‘Emirates Air Line’ for the first time. Architecturally it’s quite interesting but to my mind this is the Mayor’s vanity project – for the £60m or so it cost to construct something more practical could have been done with the money to improve London’s transport options – this will have none of the impact of the Boris Bikes (which I think are actually a good thing!). Are you planning to use it in the near future?
