Illumini Presents ‘Secret Subterranean London’

Via IanVisits I’ve found out about a rather sinister series of events that are going to be taking place in September.

Illumini will be hosting ‘Secret Subterranean London‘, a series of lectures exploring some of London’s hidden secrets from the 10th to 15th of September, with a special free opening event on the evening of Thursday 9th to kick it all off, where you’ll be able to experience stilt walkers, costumed performers, tarot readers and lots more besides. It will all be taking place in the dimly lit basement of Shoreditch Town Hall, themed to evoke memories of London’s underground past, so you’ll find World War II bunkers, crypts, a disused station and art designed to evoke mystery, horror and ritual. Talks will include “Subterranean City” where Antony Clayton will explain the rumours of secret tunnels and passages under London, and a chilling talk by Scott from ‘One Eye Grey‘ magazine entitled “Crypts, Creatures and Caverns – the Folklore of Subterranean London”. I’ve been to one of their events before, and believe me you won’t forget that experience in a hurry!

What’s even more spooky is that three of the events will actually involve participants venturing into some of these spaces – there will be two torchlit tours of the crypt of St Leonards Shoreditch, and the opportunity to visit Brunel’s Thames tunnel. I’ll be creeping around the crypt on Friday 10th September but don’t be concerned, as I’ll be carrying lots of protection… I could do with some backup though, so why not don your crucifix and come and join me?
